Yeshayahu Leibowitz: Jewish Cultural Nuisance

Yeshayahu Leibowitz (1903-1994) was simultaneously the most admired and most reviled Jewish thinker in Israel during his lifetime. He openly mocked the Kotel, regarded by many as the holies site in Judaism, as a “dis-co-tel” and compared the elite units of Israeli Army to the Nazi SS. Isaiah Berlin called him the “conscience of Israel,” and the government of Israel awarded him the prestigious Israel Prize, which he declined so as to avoid a governmental crisis. Readings will be drawn primarily from Judaism, Human Values and the Jewish State (English); please get a copy of the book prior to the first class.
