Abraham Joshua Heschel: American Prophet
Abraham Joshua Heschel (1907-1972) was one of the leading American Jewish theologians and philosophers.
Heschel, a professor of Jewish mysticism at the Jewish Theological Seminary, wrote a number of the seminal texts of 20th Century Jewish thought and was an active leader in the Civil Rights Movement. With hundreds of articles and speeches and books including The Sabbath (1951), Man Is Not Alone (1951) and The Prophets (1962), Heschel indelibly shaped progressive American Judaism. We'll primarily look at his writing, though we'll also draw from Shai Held's careful study of Heschel's theology.
